Thora Birch is teaming with Jena Malone to star in the independent rock 'n' roll feature Vinyl. Richard Zelniker wrote the project and will direct.

The film, which is expected to begin shooting in the first quarter of next year in Los Angeles, centers on the women behind a male rock 'n' roll band that is on the verge of breakout success.

Birch will play the wife of the lead singer, with Malone taking the character of a naive girl from the good side of the tracks who winds up with a lot of rock 'n' roll spirit in the end.

While they may not have guns or tanks, there are a couple of hobbits who promise the next and final "Lord of the Rings" film could give "Saving Private Ryan" a run for its money.

"It's a full-on war movie," Elijah Wood proclaimed recently, when asked about this year's "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King."

"As Elijah said, lots of war," his hobbit partner Dominic Monaghan added for emphasis.

The two pals � who played Frodo Baggins and Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck, respectively, in "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers" � will soon return to New Zealand for pickup shots and re-shoots under director Peter Jackson for the final installment of the fantasy tale, which hits theaters December 17.

"Hasn't Pete said he reckons it's gonna be the most massive war movie ever shown on film?" a wide-eyed and visibly excited Wood asked his colleague.

"Ever onscreen, yeah," answered Monaghan.

"That's what Peter is saying," Wood continued. "I mean, it's a massive boast, but I'd say it's pretty close to that."

Last year's "The Two Towers" ended with a cliffhanger as the duplicitous Gollum resolved to lead Frodo and Sam (Sean Astin) into a trap. As fans of the classic "Rings" books by J.R.R. Tolkien already know, what's awaiting the heroes is the giant spider Shelob, but nobody will know what the big-screen version will look like until "Return of the King" gets closer.

"You get things like Shelob, which a lot of the fans have been waiting for, because Shelob actually is in the second book, but it's gonna be in the third film," Wood explained.

"Return of the King" will also resolve most of the various plot threads from the first two films, specifically the fates of the Ring of Power and the brave and noble Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), on an epic and somewhat tragic scale.

"['Return of the King'] is truly sad," Monaghan said. "It's the kind of bringing together of a lot of stories. And what the fellowship has to sacrifice to essentially save Middle Earth is huge. So you see these people facing the consequences of their actions. It's just a beautiful, beautiful film."

"There is something really emotional about it," Wood agreed.

Wes Craven's Cursed

Director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson's Cursed, which Dimension Films still has set as a February 13 release, has hit some blocks in the road to completion.

The studio last month put the movie on an extended hiatus with four weeks left on the shooting schedule. The hiatus was reportedly planned and concerned the addition of special effects because the filmmakers brought in more special effects than originally planned as the film shot. Putting a film's shooting on hiatus is not an abnormal thing for a studio to do.

But it goes further than that. Apparently top executives at Miramax (Dimension's parent) weren't happy with the film's ending or how the special effects were progressing, specifically the look of the film's lead lupine. The project was then put back into a "development phase," during which all parties could agree on the final outcome.

The studio says that all the kinks have now been worked out on Cursed and a September restart is being eyed. It is unclear whether this might cause any problems with the availability of crew members or finding dates that would work for the film's ensemble cast, which includes Christina Ricci, Skeet Ulrich, Shannon Elizabeth, Omar Epps and Scott Foley.

Set in Los Angeles, the film puts a modern inventive twist on the classic werewolf tale.

Synopsis:
Sydney Bristow is not your typical graduate student. While going to school, she also works for a top secret CIA division called �SD-6�. Her work as a secret agent requires her to fly to exotic locations, fight vicious enemies, get dressed in various disguises, and make death-defying escapes. The only rule that SD-6 has for Syd is that she not tell anyone about the organization. This is not much of a problem for her since she is estranged from her father, her mother is dead, and her friends suspect nothing.

When her boyfriend Danny proposes to her, though, she feels obligated to tell him the truth. She reveals her secret life as a spy. Unfortunately, SD-6 finds out about this and has Danny brutally assassinated. Shocked and horrified, Sydney�s life is shattered. This is also her first clue that something�s not right with SD-6. When she tries to leave the organization, they attempt to assassinate her, too. When her father, Jack Bristow, comes to her rescue, she finds out that he is also an agent for SD-6. He reveals that SD-6 is not a CIA organization at all. In fact, it�s an enemy spy organization that the CIA is fighting.

With her world turned upside down, Syd turns to the real CIA for help. There she meets Agent Michael C. Vaughn who recruits her as a double agent. He also tells her that her father is already working for them as a double agent. After rejoining SD-6, Syd starts working to take down the organization from the inside and get revenge for the murder of her fianc�e. Her investigations also lead her to the �Rambaldi Prophecy�. This Renaissance document not only correctly predicts the future, but it has plans for a device that could give the owner ultimate power. With SD-6 and the CIA after it, it�s up to Sydney to save the day.

Alias � The First Season is unrated, but it has a US TV rating of �TV 14 VSL�.

The Movie:
I saw the first couple of episodes of Alias when it first came out, but due to other distractions I didn�t see many more episodes afterwards. It�s easily one of the best series on TV and I thoroughly enjoyed what I saw. However, it was next to impossible to keep track with the show and the story soon got beyond a point where I could pick it back up again. Now, with the first season released on DVD, I can go back and watch the first 22 episodes at my own pace.

As already mentioned, this TV series is one of the best out there. If you�re a fan of James Bond or even Buffy The Vampire Slayer, then this show will be right up your alley. Every episode is jam packed with action, suspense, exotic locations, and dramatic twists and turns. It�s a first class production all the way. The costumes look great, the stunts look cool, the hand-to-hand combat is well choreographed, and the acting is superb.

Alias is the show that made Jennifer Garner a real star. Not only is she beautiful, but she�s a good actress that only gets better through the series. She has the extremely difficult role of not only being the lead star of the show, but the main actor doing most of the stunts. Garner handles all of the action well and her fight work is truly impressive. She�s really the one that makes this show worth watching. A great supporting cast backs her up.

Overall, it�s a great TV show and it�s worth checking it out on DVD. You�ll see why the show has been nominated for multiple awards and why Jennifer won a Golden Globe award for best actress in a television series.

The Extras:
While fans new to the series will be kept busy just watching the TV shows, there�s plenty here to keep established fans of the series happy, too. The extras can be found on the sixth and first discs. Here are some of the highlights:

Pilot production diary � This is essentially a �Making Of The Pilot� documentary. It looks like footage from someone�s home movies spliced together into a 15-minute or so video. You�ll see Garner training for the fight scenes, J.J. Abrams figuring out how he�s going to set up shots, and more. The producer of the series also pops in and talks about what it was like putting the pilot together. It�s a pretty interesting feature.

Deleted scenes � There are 6 deleted scenes on this DVD. Most of them feature the relationship between Will and Syd. The scenes aren�t pivotal to the plots of the shows, but they do add a little more depth to the characters. There�s also one scene with Sloane where he reveals that he has set up ways to reveal SD-6 should anything ever happen to him.

�Inside Stunts� � The stunt coordinators for the show discuss how they did some of the bigger stunts in the show including a jump from a tower, a jump from a cliff, a car falling into water, a few explosions, and more. They also get in-depth into how they coordinate the fight scenes and how they practice for them. Proper credit is also given to Jennifer Garner�s stunt double, though they repeatedly state how Garner does as many of the stunts as she can on her own. It�s another cool extra on the DVD.

Gag reel � Most of these bloopers feature the cast flubbing lines or breaking into uncontrollable laughter. I thought there would be more accidents from the fight scenes, but there really weren�t that many. It�s still a fun feature.

Audio commentaries � Only four of the episodes have commentaries. The pilot has a commentary by J.J. Abrams and Jennifer Garner. Abrams dishes out a ton of trivia about the series and many factoids that you�d never know. Garner seems to declare every scene her favorite, but she also provides some great behind the scenes thoughts. If you�re a fan of the series, you�ll want to hear this. Episode 17, which is primarily a flashback episode, also has commentary from other cast members. The final episode in season one features a commentary by all the principal cast members including Garner, Garber, Vartan, and the others.

Special season 2 preview � This is a sneak peek at the second season. It reveals a lot about what happens, so you might not want to see it if you want to be surprised. Expect this to arrive on DVD soon as well.

The Bottom Line:
If you�re a fan of James Bond, Charlie�s Angels, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, then this is a DVD set you�ll want to check out. If you�re an established fan of Alias, then this is a DVD set you�ll be required to add to your collection.

Focus Features is in talks to make a feature of recently rediscovered British comic novel Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, with Frances McDormand in talks to star. David Magee will write the screenplay.

Written by Winifred Watson, the book was first published in 1938. The title character is a seasoned governess who gets a taste of a more glamorous, exciting life when sent to work in the home of nightclub performer Miss La Fosse and entrusted with sorting out the latter's highly unrespectable affairs.

McDormand would play the governess. Several high-profile actresses including Jennifer Aniston are circling the role of the amoral starlet, described in the book as having "had as many male admirers as Miss Pettigrew had had children to watch over in her long years as governess."

Tom Cruise plays Captain Nathan Algren in the amazing new epic film, The Last Samurai, from director Edward Zwick. In the Warner Bros. feature, Algren is hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's first army in the art of modern warfare. As the Emperor attempts to eradicate the ancient Imperial Samurai warriors in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly government policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly impressed and influenced by his encounters with the Samurai.

ComingSoon.net sat down to talk to Cruise who says he's always been fascinated by other cultures. "One of the great things about being an actor is I get to travel to these places," he says. "I get to learn about the people and that is the most enjoyable thing to me, to learn the history of other people and how people live in their daily lives, and even though the language is different, you find that common ground of joy, happiness, pain. It's the humanity and it really gives you a sense of we're all in this thing together here, that's why we gotta help each other out and I really enjoy that."

Cruise says that he put quite a lot of time in preparing for the project. "It took me almost a year to physically be able to make this picture. I love what I do, I take great pride in what I do and I can't do something half way, three quarters, nine tenths. If I'm going to do something I go all the way. And I didn't know if I could do it, honestly. If I could find that kind of physical elegance and movement that the Samurai have. I looked at Hiro [Sanada] and Ken [Watanabe] and there's a natural grace of them as actors. It was a year preparing, not only physically, but it was developing the character because the transition that the character makes, I kept copious amounts of notes so that I could remember, for the training sequences, where Algren starts and where he ends up. I had to study the American-Indian War. I'm an American, I thought I knew a lot about the American-Indian Wars and that time period in our history, which I was blown away at how little I knew. And also the Japanese history during that time period, how the country came to this moment. Also I went and revisited the Civil War again for myself just because Algren had lived through that time period and I collected a small library."

Physically, Cruise went through a lot of training to get into top shape. "I couldn't touch my toes when I started. I put on 25 pounds for the picture, I was 25 pounds of muscle heavier than I am right now. I worked with a great stunt coordinator, Nick Powell, who built me up very slowly. He did all kinds of Chinese sword work to build up my forearms and my shoulders just to be able to make that movement, the rotation. A lot of stretching and just training and doing the sequences, building it up and learning the moves and working, working, working, working. Working on it the same way that Aldren did in the training. I spent a year being able to do that. You see the first time that he moves in the village, and then by the end of the movie there's a grace that I was going for. And I have to say the guys I worked with were excellent."

We asked Tom what it was like working with a mostly Japanese cast. "They were very generous with me. I felt their support and we'd done so much research, they validated the research that we had done. I think they were a little surprised how extensive it was, the wardrobe, the sets, the history that we knew. And Ed wanted to know different ceremonies that you see in the film. It informed the film, it informed us about their culture. That's something we discovered through rehearsal when we were making the film. I'd always say, 'What do you think? How do you feel?' I like a sense of family. When I'm making a film, it's not about me. It's about the movie, it's about us together, working together. So I really depend on that kind of support from everyone. When it comes together, the film is much easier to make when everyone's going in the same direction, working together. It's a great feeling and I really felt that from Ken, from Hiro, from everyone involved. When I was speaking Japanese, Hiro actually came in and worked with me on my accent. They gave that kind of support throughout the entire film. I was excited the first day of rehearsal to meet the Japanese actors. I was very excited, I'd seen the tapes, Ed had met them and I was really excited to meet them. What's it going to be like? I want to learn more about their culture. You just find that you have so much in common. It was great fun, great fun."

In the film, Cruise's character is put in a house which includes a child that he grows close to. He says that he was able to work well with young Japanese actor. "He doesn't speak English, so we would draw pictures to each other back and forth. We had a wonderful communication together so he started imitating me, making all these things. I found out that he wanted to fly airplanes and he liked that I flew airplanes, so we were drawing each other airplanes back and forth. And he's just a character, you know, he's just an absolute character, wonderful."

The role also required a lot of stunts and Tom put a lot of trust in the stunt crew. "The movie needed that level or realism and it was part of the challenge for me to be able to do it, and I got through it. You're talking about those battle sequences that are twelve hours a day, so I've gotten pretty good at knowing how to take care of myself and pace myself. This movie was a marathon, so I've gotten very good at scheduling the scene and preparing myself for it, saving the energy, conserving the energy, knowing when to go for it and having the available reserves to be able to do that. You have to think about that because at the end of the day, you might be doing the close-up and working on this scene and you've got to be prepared, you've got to have it available."

The film is definitely Oscar material, but Cruise just wants you to walk out of the theater with some kind of experience. He hopes that "each audience walks away with an experience from the movie, whether it's a thrill-ride, or an epic or romance or a thriller, and I would like them to have that feeling they're going to go see a different world in the same way that I did as a kid. I want them to know that they're going to go to a time and it is authentic even though the story is fiction. The timeframe in which it takes place and the humanity in the picture is real."

Next up for Cruise is the Michael Mann-directed action-thriller Collateral. In the film, Jamie Foxx plays a Los Angeles cab driver forced to serve as a chauffeur to a contract killer (Cruise) on a string of hits. Ruffalo stars as a detective on the trail of Cruise's character. He says the project is actually untitled at the moment and that Mann is "a great guy and he's a great filmmaker. I'm really having a blast."

After he finishes that pic, it's back to the character of Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 3. He says that they are "still working on the script" for the third film in the franchise. Cruise also talked about the challenges involved in making a M:I movie. "'Mission' is always tough to do. That's the challenge of it and I hope I can [do it] because I like producing those movies. They're just fun to produce. But if I can't figure it out, then I won't be able to figure it out."

The Last Samurai, which is getting sneak previews this Saturday (check your local listings), opens on December 5.

The Walt Disney Co. is in tune with writing team Matt and Billy Eddy, picking up their musical comedy script "A Capella" for an undisclosed sum for Chris and Paul Weitz's Depth of Field to produce. "A Capella" is described as "Bring It On" set in the world of college a capella groups. The story revolves around a group of eclectic misfits who re-form their disbanded a cappella singing group. At Disney, the project was brought in by senior vp production Brad Epstein, who will oversee with director of production LouAnne Brickhouse. The project lands close to home for Matt Eddy, who has been a production executive at Depth of Field for the past three years. Producing the project will be Chris and Paul Weitz, with Depth of Field partner Andrew Miano executive producing and executive Kerry Kohansky co-producing and overseeing for her company. "It's really exciting to be involved in the beginning of Billy and Matt's career," Chris Weitz said. " 'A Cappella' would have been a great script coming from anybody, but it's especially satisfying coming from within the family." Added Miano: "It's been nice watching Matt grow both as an employee and a writer over the last few years. Hopefully, he'll want to stick around and continue to do both." "The Bourne Supremacy, which is the second book in the three book series, we�ll start shooting in November. The director is Paul Greengrass who did Bloody Sunday and Tony Gilroy is writing the original script."

Eliza Dushku is kind of a horror veteran, after a season and several guest appearances on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and movies like Soul Survivors. She's got another horror movie out this weekend, Wrong Turn, the story of a group of kids pursued by inbred mountain men when they get lost on a backwoods road. It was the villains themselves that set the movie apart for Dushku.

"I think that one of the things that convinced me to do this movie was meeting with Stan Winston," Dushku said. "I just straight out told him that with all due respect for the monsters that he's made in the past and the creatures, I just didn't really want to do a movie about a bunch of kids getting chased through the woods by ooga booga boogie monsters. That just didn't feel real to me and it didn't feel frightening right now. He said, 'Well, do these monsters make you giggle and are these monsters frightening to you?' He showed me a picture of the three mountain men and they were so just terrifying and grotesque and disgusting, because I liked the fact that they were real men and there's a story behind it."

Always a woman of action, the film also allowed her to be physically active. "Climbing, falling, running and being whipped by tree branches. We jump out of a 40 foot watch tower and we go flying through the trees and we manage to land on the limbs and we're running along the limbs of a huge like Lego Land forest of trees. It's so physical but it was so much fun."

Dushku acknowledged that movies like Wrong Turn are different from more serious films like City by the Sea, in which she played a drug addict. "Definitely it's a plot driven movie as opposed to a character driven movie. I don't know if it's more fun or if it's harder or easier, but it's cool because it's physical. We literally spent running through the woods in Toronto and running through the trees and getting cut and dirtied and bloody and that physical aspect of it."

During one stunt scene, an accident threatened a stunt man's well being. "There was actually one awful moment in shooting the scene, the finale in the cabin, I run over and grab this burning log and come up and hit the mountain man from behind. I did what they said, they're like 'It's perfectly safe. The board is just going to crack him over the back.' Well, he was wearing prosthetics all over his body which are so flammable. I hit him with a burning stick and he catches on fire. So, he went from screaming like growling screaming to all of a sudden a real man screaming who's on fire. So, they came in and they doused him down with the fire extinguisher and he was seriously burned. I felt so bad even though I knew that I hadn't done anything wrong. It's pretty intense when you're making movies and all of a sudden there's real blood and there's real wounds and pain. He was okay, but probably a little pissed off.

Andrew Dominik (Chopper) has come aboard to develop and direct Paramount Pictures' The Demolished Man.

Based on the late science-fiction author Alfred Bester's best-selling book of the same name, the project is about a future society where telepaths are a recognized group of society and often used to detect crimes before they happen. Because of their existence, crime is at an all-time low, and there hasn't been a murder in more than 70 years. When a wealthy businessman decides to murder his rival, bribing a high-ranking telepath to help him cover his tracks, a telepathic cop is brought in to investigate. Figuring out who committed the crime is easy, proving the businessman's guilt is more problematic and a battle of wits ensues between the two.

No writers or producers are attached to the project as of yet. Dominik will oversee the development of the script.

Paramount Pictures has fast-tracked a remake of the 1950 British comedy Last Holiday, with Queen Latifah set to play the role originated by Alec Guinness. The change in gender is being brought to life by writers Peter Seaman and Jeffrey Price, who wrote Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The original film was based on a J.B. Priestley story. Guinness played an ordinary man who learns he will die shortly. He cashes in everything he owns and heads to a swank resort before punching out for good. Because he doesn't know how the wealthy behave, his manner confuses residents, who decide his eccentricity means he is super-rich and must be listened to.

The contemporized version will star Latifah as a shy, unassuming sales clerk who vanishes to a European resort upon learning of her diagnosis. Thinking she has nothing to lose, she becomes increasingly outrageous and irreverent.

Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith are set to play cops in an untitled actioner also being developed at Paramount.

�Mucha Lucha!, the first-ever, all-Flash-animated television series, is a wildly inventive comedy-adventure about honor, family, tradition and...donuts, drawing its inspiration from Latin culture and exploring the Mexican phenomenon known as "Lucha Libre." The half-hour series, which is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and returns to Kids' WB! in the fall, has received a second-season, 26-episode pick-up from the number one broadcast network for kids, bringing the total commitment to 39 episodes. In addition to their current television series, the stars of �Mucha Lucha!, three mascaritas -- Rikochet, Buena Girl and The Flea -- who study and live the "Code of Masked Wrestling," will appear in a mini-DVD this fall in a consumer/retail promotion from Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Warner Home Video, as well as "Heart of Lucha," a special episodic-compilation video release. The mascaritas also will headline an original feature-length, made-for-video adventure from Warner Home Video and then catapult onto the big screen with their own feature film from Warner Bros. As part of the comprehensive licensing program supporting this property, DC Comics has entered the arena with a line of limited series of �Mucha Lucha! comic books following the exploits of the pint-sized wrestlers. Topher Grace Remains Stuck in the '70s

That '70s Show star Topher Grace is finalizing a new deal with producer Carsey-Werner-Mandabach that will keep him on the Fox comedy series as teen Eric Forman through the 2004-05 season. Grace already was under contract for the upcoming 2003-04 season.

The new pact for the 2004-05 season is said to bump his per-episode salary to the same range of $250,000-$300,000 that co-star Ashton Kutcher recently secured. That puts the total value of Grace's one-season, 25-episode deal in the $6 million-$8 million bracket.

CWM and Fox have now secured all of the cast members through May 2005.
